Before we tell you about the anxiety medication, let’s get to know about cat anxiety first. Cat anxiety happens when a cat experiences anxiety due to anticipating danger, real or imagined, which results in physical reactions.
You can just tell when a cat is anxious. More often than not, an anxious cat will look afraid and/or stress for no apparent reasons. Of course, it doesn’t mean there is no reason for its anxiety at all. There is, but it will take time to investigate and determine the cause.
There are many things that may cause anxiety in a cat. For instance, a new member in the household, moving to a new house, lack of socialization, infectious diseases, exposure to something toxic, an aging brain, a traumatic experience, a visit to the vet and separation from the owner.
Signs of Cat Anxiety
Here are the signs of cat anxiety according to PetMD:
Becoming less active than usual
Withdrawal, hiding or trying to escape
Aggressive or destructive behavior
Reduced or loss of appetite
Sores or lesions due to over-grooming
Inability to use their litter box
These are the most common signs of cat anxiety. All of the above signs are easy to spot, especially if you know well how your cat acts. However, if you are unsure, the best thing you can do is to take your cat and visit a vet.
There two common types of prescription cat anxiety medication. The first type is the benzodiazepines. As you may have expected, this prescription drug is used to treat cats that have anxiety problems.
Some of the most popular benzodiazepines are diazepam and lorazepam. Benzodiazepines work by reducing the fear responsive of cats. Unlike other types of medications, benzodiazepines work immediately.
The second type is the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRI. SSRI, just like benzodiazepines, is a drug used to treat cat anxiety. Whereas benzodiazepines work by reducing the fear response of a cat, SSRI works by affecting the serotonin level.
serotonin is a chemical that affects mood. Two most commonly used SSRIs are fluoxetine and sertraline. The effects of SSRI are not immediate.
Using the Medication
Next, how to use cat anxiety medication. Most of the medications used to treat anxiety need to be given to the cat daily. Some of these medications are safe to use long-term, while some others are not. SSRIs can be used long-term, while benzodiazepinescan’t. The reason is that benzodiazepines affect a cat’s memory and they may make a cat sluggish.
If your cat is experiencing anxiety, please take it to a vet if you haven’t already. Don’t give it a medication without the approval and supervision of a veterinarian. A vet should be able to tell you which medication your cat should get.
